Dressage: LENDON GRAY TEEN PROTÉGÉ WINS HER CLASS PLUS TRILOGY SADDLES’ BEST SEAT AWARD AT GOLD COAST CDI

Despite her tender age of 16, Lendon Gray protégé Rachel Chowanec took home top honors at her first CDI of 2011, in front of top American and European judges; she also won the Trilogy Saddles’ Best Seat award by unanimous decision of the judges’ committee. It’s a result illustrating Trilogy’s philosophy that saddle fit and rider position are crucial in helping both horse and rider achieve their best in performance.

Chowanec’s partner in the FEI Junior Rider Individual Test, 13-year-old PRE (Pura Raza Española or Pure Spanish Horse) gelding Embrujado XI (‘Mouse’), has been her new ‘ride’ for two years, a grown-up mount to succeed the longtime dressage pony who helped Chowanec get started in Junior competition. “We were looking for a while, and one day about two years ago PRE breeder Kim Boyer called and said ‘I think I found the horse.’ That horse was Mouse, and I love him with all my heart.”

Riding with Gray since the age of 9, Chowanec’s dedication to dressage and horses has meant long hours in the saddle, receiving her schooling online, and even relying on horses to soothe her homesickness. “It’s a great experience to ride with Lendon, but it’s meant I’ve been away from home for long periods,” she says.

Hailing from Columbia, Conn., Chowanec reports she got bitten by the dressage bug back in 2000, at age six, and her commitment has only grown since. Trilogy Saddles President Debbie Witty says it’s been a pleasure to watch Chowanec’s development over the years at Gray’s facility. “It’s wonderful to see all Rachel’s hard work pay off, and especially in such a competitive venue as the Gold Coast Dressage Opener,” says Witty.

When asked what Witty hopes to accomplish through the Best Seat Award program, she points out the award was developed with multi-faceted reasons.

“We wanted to publicly declare our commitment to how saddle fit and rider position affect the horse’s capacity to move freely and willingly, at the best level of his or her abilities. We also want to inspire and educate riders to take responsibility for their own riding position, and to get the training they need to improve their own seat,” reports Witty. “A saddle’s fit and the rider’s position shouldn’t impede the horse’s movement anywhere, and if both are correct, they actually enhance horse and rider communication.”

Chowanec joins the ranks of other recent Best Seat winners, such as Justin Hardin, Elizabeth Ball, and Christopher Schruefer: Trilogy Saddles - News & ‘Best Seat’ Award Recipients

As for Rachel Chowanec’s future with Mouse, Witty and Gray both agree that it’s a bright one. “Rachel winning the Best Seat Award is just as impressive as her winning the class,” reports Gray.

Carrying out their philosophy of ‘achieving a greater level of performance and awareness for horse and rider through education, service, and design’ means the Trilogy Saddles team lives and breathes a dedication to comfort, health, performance, and freedom of movement. These qualities are just as important for the horse as for the rider, and it’s up to each Trilogy saddle fitter to ensure that saddle fit and rider position enhance communication, performance, and the overall beauty that is a horse and rider in perfect harmony.

About Debbie Witty:
From the time she could hot walk racehorses, Debbie Witty’s family held her to exacting standards in the family business. That early training has served her well in a life spent amongst horses and horse people, from Witty’s career as a dressage competitor and instructor to her days helping top equestrians in obtaining the best saddle fit. Witty’s life and work have come full circle with Performance Saddlery and Trilogy Saddles, since she’s able to incorporate everything she’s learned as a trainer and rider, as a tack shop owner, and as a saddle fitter certified by the Society of Master Saddlers of England.

Dressage: FEI: WEG 2010: Dutch dressage rider Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich's Parzival's Elimination from WEG 2010 May Not Have Been Legal

Jerich's Parzival's tongue nick which prompted the controversial elimination - WEG 2010 (FEI Photo)
Horse and Hound reports that  Dutch dressage rider Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich's Parzival's elimination from the World Equestrian Games (WEG) last year may not have been within FEI rules.

At the time, the media widely reported technical delegate Dr Wotjek Markowski's view that FEI, horsesport's international governing body, rules about blood or foam in the mouth gave the judges "no choice" but to eliminate — and riders no right of appeal.

However, astonishingly, an investigation by continental magazine Horse International found no such rule in either the FEI's dressage, general or veterinary regulations.

As a consequence, the FEI is creating a new rule covering blood in a horse's mouth...  Read the entire Horse and Hound article.

Wellington, FL - February 25, 2011 - The 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, which runs through April 3, is well into its seventh week of the winter season here in Wellington. While many hunter riders have seen success while competing at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, not many have seen as much success as Visse Wedell in the Roberto Coin Low Adult Hunters 2'6" Section A.

Wedell rode White Cap to the championship this week. Of the five weeks that Wedell has shown White Cap this year at the WEF, she has been champion all five times. Wedell's impressive record has led her to be a regular invite to the parade of champions on Sunday afternoons in the International Arena. She secured this week's championship by winning three classes and placing second in another class.

The reserve champion in the Roberto Coin Low Adult Hunters 2'6" Section A went to Milan. Mary Tyree rode Milan, a Dutch Warmblood gelding, for the First Partners Inc. Tyree secured the reserve championship by winning one class and placing fifth in another class.

Visse Weddell and White Cap
Wedell leases White Cap, a Trakehner gelding by Lamarc, from Far Niente Equine of Wellington, Florida. When asked just how many times she has been champion aboard White Cap, Wedell explained, "Five times. I say that with gratefulness to all who have helped me get to the ring." She went on to say, "I have great horses and a great team that help get everything ready; I'm definitely lucky to have them."

Wedell has multiple horses showing at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival this season. Among them are Spandau, a green working hunter, and Cloudline, who shows in the junior hunters. Wedell recently purchased Spandau and explained how happy she is with him. "He amazes us every week that he goes to horse show," she said. "He's one of the coolest horses I've ever seen."

As the weekend begins, the junior hunter riders and horses will compete to be the week 7 champions at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival.

Jumping: FEI: IN MEMORIAM: DEBBY WINKLER (USA/GER)

Debby Winkler riding Sakrus © Julia Rau

Debby Winkler (née Malloy), wife of German Jumping legend Hans Günter Winkler, has passed away following a tragic riding accident. Mrs Winkler was seriously injured in a fall at the end of a training session on 18 February and was rushed to the University Clinic in Münster in critical condition. Sadly her injuries were too severe and, despite the best possible medical care, she died on 21 February. She was 51 years of age.

American-born Debby Malloy married five-times Olympic champion Hans Günter Winkler in 1994, having trained with him in Warendorf since 1986. Debby Winkler was successful in many Jumping events, her greatest achievement being a second place finish in the Frankfurt Grand Prix in 1998 with Sakrus HG.

Debby Winkler was a close personal friend to FEI President HRH Princess Haya, who said, "There is a comfort in knowing that horsemen and women who move on from our world, straight from the saddle, have done so on the terms they would have wished for. And yet I cannot find the words to justly pay tribute to Debby. She was so quiet in her ways, so kind and accepting, so humble and gentle that one would have thought she would live forever.

Many of us get into this sport in pursuit of personal greatness and sporting ambition. The race of people like Debby who get into it, and stay with it, for the love of the horse in its absolute purist form, are rare. Rarer still are the ones who strive to conquer the philosophy of the sport and the art form. That was Debby. In her, horse sport has lost one of the greatest human beings and horsewomen it ever had.

My heart goes out to Debby’s beloved husband, and to the Malloy family, for a wife and a daughter who quietly touched so many people in the most profound way, with eternal elegance and dignity. Rest in peace, Debby. We know, beyond all doubt, that every horse in heaven is waiting for you."

The FEI offers sincere condolences to Mrs Winkler’s family, to the German equestrian community, and in particular to her husband Hans Günter Winkler, the only Jumping rider to win seven Olympic medals, and the only equestrian athlete in any discipline to win medals in six editions of the Olympic Games.

The memorial service for Debby Winkler will be held on Tuesday 1 March, at 2pm at the German Olympic Equestrian Committee (DOKR) in Warendorf (GER). Media representatives wishing to attend are requested to register by 2pm on Monday 28 February using this form.

day session which followed a weekend of competition for many at the Wellington Classic Spring Challenge CDI-W.

Held at Walter and Mary Anne McPhail's High Meadow Farm in Loxahatchee, FL, the session was formatted to give all riders the unique benefit of gaining expertise from both Gribbons and McDonald. The pair worked jointly with all the riders on Monday and then split the effort on Tuesday with Gribbons lending guidance to the more advanced combinations and McDonald focusing on the developing combinations.

Rider JJ Tate saw much improvement with her Intermediaire I horse, Faberge.

"The clinic with Anne and Debbie was super helpful," said Tate. "I got assistance from both of them on the first day and it was great to get their joint feedback on my horse. On the second day, I had a fabulous ride with Debbie; I felt she helped me get to a brand new level with my horse. We followed up on what we all had worked on the first day, and Faberge just felt amazing."

Following a solid performance in the weekend's CDI-W Grand Prix, Susan Jaccoma rode Wadamur on both days of the session, "I enjoyed having the first day with Anne teaching and Debbie adding what she saw to my lesson," said Jaccoma.  "Anne and Debbie work well together. I enjoyed having two pairs of experienced eyes on me!"

The next Observation Session will take place April 6-7 in San Diego, CA with Gribbons, for more information please click here.

Wellington, FL - February 19, 2011 - The Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Series Classic was held today, and it was Marie Hecart (FRA) on Babbe van't Roosakker, owned by Haras de la Rogue, who were the fastest double clear combination. They won the sixth event in the Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Series, which will award $50,000 in rider bonus money at the end of the series.

The FTI Winter Equestrian Festival's sixth week of competition continues through Sunday, February 20. Week six, sponsored by Fidelity Investments, will feature the $50,000 G&C Farm Palm Beach Jumping Derby on Sunday at 3 p.m. at The Stadium. The 2011 WEF will continue through April 3 and award more than $6 million in prize money.

There were 34 entries in today's 1.50m classic, and seven of those were able to find the clear round over a course designed by Steve Stephens of Palmetto, FL. Hecart and Babbe van't Roosakker, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare by Kannan, were able to keep a quick pace and efficient turns for the fastest clear jump-off ride in 39.496 seconds.

Second place went to Sergio Niento Del Rio with Fabiana, who were also double clear in 41.246 seconds, while Scott Brash (GBR) and Intertoy Z were just behind in third with a time of 41.361 seconds.

Hecart and Babbe have a long history together. Hecart's family and father, famous show jumper Michel Hecart, run a large breeding operation of 200 horses at Haras de la Rogue, which is next to the Deauville show grounds. Babbe has been in the barn since she was two years old. Hecart rode the mare when she was five years old before she moved to North America. Michel Hecart will be in Wellington tomorrow to help the French team in the $75,000 FEI Nations Cup, presented by G&C Farm, on Friday, March 4.

She explained, "All the horses that I ride now are from them. It's perfect for me; they send horses to me that are for sale. It works well. I knew her a little bit when she was young, but she has changed a lot. My dad rode her, and she did grand prix in France."

Hecart said of the course, "I think it was a nice course considering the ring. He didn't build too big, which is good because there were a lot of tight turns. I watched parts of the jump-off. I wanted to make sure what I walked would work, and that I could do the inside turn. I just went, and it worked!"

Hecart and Babbe were third in last week's 1.50m class, which shows great consistency for the mare. "She just started showing here three weeks ago," Hecart smiled. "It's always nice to win."

Hunters Compete in the E.R. Mische Grand Hunter Ring

World Champion Hunter Rider (WCHR) competition continued at the FTI WEF today with an exciting win for Weatherly Stroh and Sigfried in the $5,000 WCHR Amateur-Owner Hunter 3'3" Classic. Stroh and Sigfried, owned by Susanne Stroh, earned a score of 164 to top the class. Sandra Epstein and Catamount finished in second place, just half a point behind the leaders with a score of 163.5. Nicole Olinyk and Sea Walker finished in third with a 160.75, and Jean Sheptoff rode Condesi to fourth place honors with a score of 155.25.

Weatherly Stroh and Sigfried $5,000 win the WCHR Amateur-Owner Hunter 3'3" Classic -  Sportfot photo
Class winner Weatherly Stroh is from Colorado and this is her first time competing in Wellington at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. Stroh usually shows in Arizona during the winter season and was excited for a change of scenery this year. While in Florida, Stroh is riding with trainer Heather Irvine.

"Heather talked us into coming and I just wanted to see what it was like," Stroh stated. "It has been great; it is way beyond what we expected. Everybody has been so friendly and the weather is fantastic. The jumps are beautiful and the rings are great. It has been a lot of fun."

Stroh's mount today was Sigfried, a nine-year-old Westphalian gelding. Sigfried shows in the Second Year Green Hunters with rider Erynn Ballard, and this is Stroh's first year riding him. Sigfried also showed in last night's professional WCHR Palm Beach Hunter Classic Spectacular with Ballard and was in top form for Stroh today.

"He is just so much fun to ride; he has the best canter, which makes it so easy to find the jumps on," Stroh noted. "You just loop the reins and he goes. I am having so much fun with him. Yesterday I was a little bit inconsistent so I knew today that there were people that had better scores than me, so my goal was just to be smooth and try not to do anything drastic."

Stroh plans to take next week off and will then compete two more weeks in Florida. She will return to Colorado for the summer and then hopes to compete at indoors this fall. As she gets more comfortable and confident in her partnership with Sigfried, Stroh also hopes to move up to the 3'6" division this year.
