19th January 2011
The 2011 Baileys JAS season kicked off at Vale View last weekend with the first of 12 qualifying rounds, under the eagle eyes of Kenneth Clawson and Caroline Moore FBHS.
“The standard was unbelievably high,” Caroline said. “It was really refreshing to see. The track jumped well although the brush at the start of the cross country section caught a few out, and in the main competitors rode in good balance on accurate lines – every year the standard gets better.”

Dressage: USEF Runs High Performance Observation Session in Florida
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) ran a High Performance dressage observation session at Mary Anne and Walter McPhail's High Meadow Farm in Loxahatchee, FL over the weekend of January 8-9. Eleven horse/rider combinations participated in the observation session with U.S. Dressage Technical Advisor, Anne Gribbons. Arlene 'Tuny' Page rode two horses and found the insight from Gribbons invaluable.
"It was a nice opportunity for Anne to become familiar with my horses," said Page. "She has an excellent eye... which is just the feedback that I needed before our first qualifier of the season. Her suggestions for technique and exercises were helpful and improved both of my horses."
Many of these horse/rider combinations are preparing for the upcoming Florida CDI-Ws which will run at the Gold Coast Opener (January 20-23), the Wellington Classic Spring Challenge (February 11-13) and the Palm Beach Dressage Derby (March 3-6).
The following horse/rider combinations participated in the observation session with Gribbons:
Lynda Alicki/Donates and Ikaros
Sue Jaccoma/Wadamur
Jen Marchand/Roby W II
Arlene Page/Alina and Ice Cup
Cesar Parra/Grandioso
Sharon McCusker/Juli Sherif
Lauren Sprieser/Ellegra
Katherine Batesone-Chandler/Dea II

In just a few seconds on a sunny afternoon last October, Italian eventing horse Iman du Golfe went from the ride of a lifetime to fighting for his life.
In late December, after almost three months of recovery at a Paris farm, the horse flew home to Europe, not just healthy but sound enough to ride.
It was a miracle that Dr. Chris Newton of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital doubted he'd see after the horse tore open his left front leg during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.
"It's fantastic," Newton said. "He was the most significantly injured horse at the World Equestrian Games, and he's now back home. ... It really speaks well that we could have that many horses come here from such tremendous distances to compete at such a high level and not have a single horse not return home. That's rare..."
